POSITION: Communications Specialist
Temporary Full-Time - up to 18 months

POSITION SUMMARY:
Connecting the Dots for Family Caregivers is a regional project aimed to improve quality of care and experience for family caregivers, patients and healthcare providers in Huron Perth (HP). The project is one of four funded projects in Ontario, funded by The Change Foundation. Six healthcare providers in HP are partners in this project: HPHA, One Care, North Huron Family Health Team, Star Family Health Team, Alzheimer’s Society, and the SWLHIN Home & Community Care. Partner organizations and caregivers are working together to create tools and resources that will help raise awareness about the role of the caregiver, while helping them feel more supported, valued, and engaged in their important role.
In a specialist role, the Communications Specialist will work with project leadership, project team, staff, caregivers, and partner organizations to ensure the strategic project framework communication activities and service description items are carried out. The role includes providing operational communication support as well as creating a communication strategy to support the implementation and spread of developed tools and resources. The candidate must be highly experienced in communications, media relations and partnership based initiatives. They will support the coordination of communications activities as well as work collaboratively with The Change Foundation and the other funded projects within the Changing CARE initiative.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or related discipline
• Preferred background in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or Marketing
Experience:
• Minimum 2 years progressively responsible experience with communications and marketing, media relations
• Previous experience in a healthcare and/or not-for-profit sector is preferred

Abilities:
• Demonstrates knowledge of current and emergent communications trends including knowledge of web-based applications/opportunities
• Demonstrates excellence in written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills including tact and discretion
• Demonstrates patient and family centered commitment as well as experience working closely with patients and caregivers
• Demonstrates advanced organization and time management skills
• Demonstrates knowledge of the Ontario healthcare system including primary, acute, community, and Long-Term Care settings
• Demonstrates superior computer knowledge - use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and communications software applications, preferably Microsoft Office suite. Graphic design experience is an asset.
• Proven experience and success using a content management system, email newsletter platforms and social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube
• Excellent communications skills with ability to explain findings and recommendations from complex projects to internal and external stakeholders
• Demonstrates a keen interest in learning about new and emerging tools such as smart phone and tablet applications, new social media trends, etc.
Position Specific Functions:
• Execute communication activities outlined in the communication framework working closely with the project team members
• Create content, manage, design, and distribution of monthly project newsletters
• Development of communication tools based on the work of co-design teams and groups, including creation of project videos along with guiding caregiver and provider stories
• Update the project website and manage social media channels and web presence
• Develop key messages for different audiences
• Apply branding guidelines at a project level and give The Change Foundation the opportunity to sign off on any reference to The Change Foundation and its involvement in the project
• Liaise with The Change Foundation through participation in monthly communication meetings which includes the Communications team members from the three other funded projects
• Work collaboratively with the other three teams, share ideas, and work with The Change Foundation to ensure products meet the needs of the Changing CARE initiative
• Develop, edit, and format print publications
• Ongoing measurement and reporting of existing communication indicators
• Create monthly leadership updates for project partner organizations
• Participate in Steering Committee, Operations Committee, Project Team, and Co Design meetings where appropriate
• Event planning and execution based on requests and needs of the project
• Prepare and deliver project presentations to a variety of audiences
• Assist with gathering and summarizing project information related to project measurement including qualitative feedback
• Media engagement and advertising
• The candidate will ensure effective communication with the Steering Committee and partners for all related communication activities, managing relationships with all project contributors.
• Execute the day-to-day activities laid out in the project communications plan
• Work collaboratively with the project team to ensure implementation of project deliverables
